The short version. Learn Birds works fully offline, with no account, and by default nothing you do leaves your device. There are no ads and we never sell your data. The only time anything is stored off your device is if you choose to make an account to sync across devices, or buy an optional content pack on our website.

What stays on your device

By default the app keeps everything on your device. Your learning progress — which birds you've learned, your streak, your settings — is stored locally and sent nowhere. No account is required and the app works offline. If you clear the app's data or uninstall it, that progress is gone unless you have signed in to sync it. You can export a backup, import one, or reset everything from the app's Settings.

If you create an account (optional)

An account is optional and exists only to sync your progress across devices and to restore any content packs you bought on our website. Sign-in is passwordless: we email you a one-time sign-in link (on the website) or a one-time code (in the Android app) — there is no password to set or remember. If you sign in, we store:

Your email address, to identify your account.
Your learning progress and which packs you own, so they follow you to your other devices.

This account data is stored on our own server (self-hosted, not a third-party cloud) and is encrypted in transit. Signing out stops syncing and leaves your progress on the device. You can delete your account and all data synced to it at any time — see Delete your account & data.

Purchases

A few optional content packs can be bought on our website. Payments are handled by Stripe — we never see or store your card details. The Android app has no in-app purchases; packs you bought on the web unlock automatically when you sign in.

Analytics

Our website uses Umami, a privacy-friendly analytics tool, to see which pages and features are used. It is cookie-free, records only anonymous, aggregate usage, does no cross-site tracking, and is not used to identify you personally. The Android app runs no analytics at all.

Children

Learn Birds is suitable for all ages. There are no ads, no third-party ad tracking, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children. An account is optional and never required to use the app.

Your rights

You can use the app with no account and with no data ever leaving your device. If you do have an account, you can export or reset your data in the app, and under UK GDPR you have the right to access, correct, or erase your personal data. To erase it, email us or follow Delete your account & data, and we'll delete your account and any synced data.
